One of my favorite idiomatic expressions is “If a tree falls in a forest and no one was there to hear it, did it make a sound?” How does this apply to you the reader?
It applies as follows: Many of us have a story to tell; a uniqueness of our personalities and upbringing allows us to “bring to the table” a potentially fascinating and unique story yet with familiar elements of the human condition. Even if from a business perspective, whether you are a Jack Welch or an unknown entrepreneur with a unique take on your product or niche you have something to pass on to the rest who may learn from you.
Writing is not only a method to be able to express oneself in a creative fashion but also can provide the writer with profits should their work succeed to a reasonable level as well as promote the writer in whatever endeavor one pursues. If you are an educator, we all understand how writing, be it a text, article or blog not only increases one’s stature in the field of education but at the college level is many times required of one. The same holds true for any profession that you may be in. When you author on a subject you become an “authority” on that subject.
Google is now giving special consideration in its latest algorithms in order to determine the rank of a website, using “author authority” or “page authority” and to quote Google’s Matt Cutts, “We are doing a doing a better job of detecting when someone is sort of an authority in a specific space. It could be medical; it could be travel, whatever. And trying to makes sure that those rank a little more highly, if you are some sort of authority or a site that according to the algorithms we think might be a little bit more appropriate for users.”
Why Do This Now: The answer is now is always the best time to do something positive and in this particular “now” with a stagnant economy, anyone succeeding now stands a chance on the upside of soaring when we are in a better economy and at the very least, BEING THERE, when the economy gets better while your peers may have dropped by the wayside. Also consider the fact that books are selling, magazines are still very viable and the production costs of each are comparatively low compared to pre recession times.
What are you waiting for, tell your story, expand your horizons and let people know you as the expert and “author-ity” that you are. To quote Rabbi Hillel, one of the most influential scholars in Jewish history: “If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?”
