book authoring, google authoring, book printingNo, it is not like the NY Times Best Seller list nor is it a qualitative review of your work. But……It is important for you to be aware of as most of you will use your website and/or blog to promote your bookmagazine or widget.

“Author Rank” is your rank for the content you write and where it travels from and to when first posted online. It is your reputation for being a “creator of content”. It is one of the most important contributors to how well your website is perceived by Google when ranking sites for search.

For years Google has caused SEO people to mouth the phrase “content is king” and we all knew that the content on the page had to be relevant. Many of the things we did in the past to bump up our search presence, such as Meta keywords, hyperlinks on the page and other easy ways to emphasize what we were marketing are now much less important if not irrelevant. However content is still king and the key to utilizing your content is to be recognized by Google for its authorship.

I have written before how simply authoring a book, makes one look like an “expert” in the field one has written about. Establishing one’s authority on the web also increases one’s legitimacy. Furthermore, as previously written, you benefit when you establish your “authority” by allowing people to perceive you as an “expert” as most people would prefer to do business with or hire an “expert” than not. This is Google’s way of allowing you to expand your “authority” as an “expert” and protect the credibility of their search results.

Many have thought that when they first saw the roll out of Google’s Plus, that it was simply a clone of FaceBook, or another social networking site. Not true. Google Plus is their way of establishing your identity so that all that you do is tied together. This includes your website, blog, Gmail account, YouTube, Plus and more. Furthermore Google is using Plus to influence search results. Google is verifying you the writer/author and establishing your credibility so that you will be ranked as purely as possible and it is based on your content and authorship. Relevancy is Google’s ultimate guideline in search ranking. Google wants the end user of search to always get back the most “relevant” results and from the most “trusted content creators”.

When you post in Google Plus Google is looking at your engagement level, the authority of sites you publish on, and more. In addition to these they look at the following:

  • How many circles does the author belong to?
  • How many books you have published.
  • Other social networking sites such as Twitter or LinkedIn with re-tweets or reposting.
  • How many subscribers you have to your YouTube video.
  • How often and how quickly your content is shared.
  • Were your likes or shares from other “experts”?
  • What is the quality of the comments?
  • How many Plus 1’s (likes) you have.
  • The frequency of your posts.
  • The amount of comments on your posts.

Google in reality is also making it easier for you to establish your “brand” by neatly tying all of your online engagement into one neat ball. It is for this reason that Google Plus is so important and the need for you to establish your authorship by signing your name to all you write, tie it in with Google Plus and establish your authorship with Google.  Here is all you need to do per Google:

  1. You can link content you publish on a specific domain (such as to your Google+ profile.
  2. Sign up for Google+ and create a Google+ profile.
  3. Make sure you have a profile photo with a recognizable headshot.
  4. Make sure a byline containing your name appears on each page of your content (for example, “By Ira Blacker”).
  5. Make sure your byline name matches the name on your Google+ profile.
  6. Verify you have an email address (such as on the same domain as your content. (Don’t have an email address on the same domain? Then link your content to your Google+ profile)

There is some minor code to add to your website or blog and can be found on Google at:

Fundamentally what you are doing with Plus and all else you do is twofold: Firstly you are creating quality content, establishing relationships and building your identity or brand. The second thing you are doing is showing Google that what you post is relevant and trustworthy for their search results. You get rewarded by higher search ranking for this and Google is providing a system which is, while being intrusive, guaranteeing them that you are neither spamming nor gaming them.

Therefore post and network on Google Plus as often as possible while creating content worth sharing. Show your expertise and claim your “authorship” for all you post. Google is trying to recognize the experts in any given industry as part of their search methodology. Don’t miss out as you can shine for the expert that you are or can become.
